Sea creatures, both real and imaginary, decorate this silver serving dish. Triton, son of the sea god Poseidon, is perched on the rim blowing his conch shell. Triton is described in Greek myth as half-man, half-fish. Hippocampi, horses with fish tails, hold up the tureen. Small turtles support the base of the dish. Next to them are rough pieces of coral, which may have been cast in silver from real sea coral. The other sea creatures were modeled by the English goldsmith John Bridge or his assistants, before they were cast and attached to the large shell which forms the bowl.
